Smart cities are cities which look to reduce CO2 emissions and resource consumption by operating more efficiently. One smart city area that is close to GoKid’s heart is traffic and congestion reduction. By encouraging families to share driving responsibilities we can take cars off the road during high-congestion times of day.

There are many ways cities can be smart, so we also want to encourage smart and environmentally friendly living in other ways – there are many apps and practices that can help families operate “smart.”

Here we blog about our favorite smart cities books, our favorite smart companies, and give recommendations about how cities  and families can be smarter.

5 Startups Changing Urban Transport in LA

GoKid moved into the kid transportation space because we saw a need to transform urban transport in LA. LA’s traffic is the worst in the world for the sixth year running. That’s a major problem for parents wasting hours in the car taking their kids here and there – and it is a major problem for […] Read more

Four Ways We Can Solve City Traffic

City traffic and congestion is an issue that’s only getting worse. Even with the presence of public transportation systems, vehicles remain necessary, and in many cases, a city’s infrastructure just can’t keep up with the volume of vehicles. If you’ve ever tried to travel through a city during rush hour, you know the frustration of […] Read more

Smart City Initiatives

In 2008, the number of people worldwide living in urban population centers surpassed the number of people living in rural areas for the first time in history. The growing population of the world, and the growth of cities in particular, has created numerous challenges for humanity. Cities are often crowded, polluted, and difficult to travel […] Read more

Standing by the Paris Climate Agreement

We have to admit that it was a terrible day for the world yesterday. How can we as parents, explain to our children why the US is leaving the Paris climate agreement? It is a treaty that took years to agree on and that is vital for the future of our planet. Two years ago, […] Read more

Moving People, Not Cars

This week we were tagged in a video by Mobility Lab about the future of mobility titled Filling up seats in cars: The future of driving in which the main theme was “moving people instead of just cars.” The theme of the video was related to my question in last week’s blog: Can the slate […] Read more

Climate Action, One City at a Time

Smarter Streets for Smarter Citizens

While doing research on urban traffic congestion I came across Samuel Schwartz’s book Street Smart: The Rise of Cities and the Fall of Cars. At first I was hesitant to purchase the book, it seemed to really exceed my needs – 292 pages on smart streets only? But the title is a bit deceptive as this book is about much […] Read more

Using Data to Solve Urban Problems

I love data and research, I will even admit that in college I really liked my Social Statistics class. I am a huge Atul Gwande fan, he is doctor and researcher who examines all sorts of areas to understand what works and what does not– the Checklist Manifesto is one of my favorite books of […] Read more

Cities as Startups?

I recently attended the book presentation Start-Up City by Gabe Klein, former Director of Transportation of both D.C. and Chicago. The first thing I thought was: Wow this guy is pretty young – aren’t high ranking city officials supposed to be white haired? Second thought: That’s a pretty unusual book format – a small, square […] Read more
