Most of us make New Year’s resolutions every year. People vow to get in shape, run a marathon, give up sugar, kick their coffee habits, get more sleep, learn a new skill, try new things or whatever other goals they may have. Unfortunately, many of these resolutions wind up dead by February. Thankfully, there are some resolutions you can make that are positive and easy to stick with. Making the decision to carpool is one that has numerous benefits for you, your family and the world.

Here are the five best benefits of carpooling this year:

  1. Saves Time

Think about the amount of time you spend driving your kids to school, waiting in drop-off and pick-up lines and sitting in school-zone traffic. When you carpool, you’ll cut the amount of time you spend driving in half, if not even more. If you get enough people involved, you could only be driving to school once a week. That will leave you with more time in the mornings to get ready, read, relax, exercise (one of your new year resolutions!) or whatever else you want to do.

  1. Saves Money

Carpooling saves money in numerous ways. First, you’re simply using less gas since you’re not making the drive every single day. You’ll watch your monthly fuel expenses decrease immediately. There are also long-term savings associated with carpooling. You won’t put miles on your car as quickly when you cut out one daily commute, so the natural wear and tear on your car will be slower. You will be able to go longer between maintenance services because you’ll be driving less.

  1. Reduces Traffic

Sitting and waiting in traffic is frustrating. When you carpool, that’s one (or two!) fewer cars on the road at that time. Imagine if everyone at your child’s school carpooled with at least one other person. The amount of traffic at the start and end of the school day would be cut in half! With fewer cars on the road, it takes less time to get to your destination, and probably with less frustration, as well.

  1. Better for the Environment

Carpooling doesn’t just benefit you personally. In addition to reducing traffic, having fewer cars on the road reduces the amount of pollution emitted. There’s less carbon emitted into the air, helping keep the air, water and land cleaner. You’ll know that every time you carpool, you’re doing just a little bit to help save the world. It also lessens the demand for gasoline, which in turn drives the prices down—more savings!

  1. More Fun

Your children will love spending time with their friends in the car on the way to school. They can talk, play games, sing songs and just hang out for a few minutes outside of the classroom. Even if you carpool with a new neighbor or classmate, your child will befriend them soon enough. Plus, you may meet some other parents and make new friends, too.
